The Toronto

A boozy take on the after dinner mint.

Canadian whiskey is all too often overlooked, but it is the hero in this booze forward and bracingly bitter drink. This is not an American whiskey cocktail for beginners, but fans of this style of digestif will appreciate its herbaceous complexity and stomach soothing properties!

Ingredients

  • 60ml (2oz) Canadian whiskey

  • 15ml (1/2oz) Fernet Branca

  • 15ml (1/2oz) sugar syrup

  • 2 dash Angostura bitters

  • Lemon twist to garnish (or orange if you prefer)

  • Good ice

Equipment

  • A coupe

  • A mixing glass

  • A jigger

  • A julep strainer

  • A barspoon (ostentatiously long one preferred)

Method

Prep your twist.

Add all ingredients to the mixing glass, fill with as much ice as possible and stir until desired dilution.

Strain into chilled coupe glass, squeeze the lemon twist to expel the citrus oil over the drink then add to drink. Enjoy!

Suggested Spirits

This cocktail was intended to hero Canadian whiskey (hence the name!) but another mellow whisk(e)y can work as well- something Irish such as Jameson is probably the closest. We went for Canadian Club 20yo as the age gives it a bit more structure.

Fernet Branca is quite a specific flavour; you can absolutely try substituting another amaro but you will lose the distinctive minty-ness from the drink.
