Sex on the Beach

The story behind this cocktail is about as romantic as its name- apparently a bartender called Ted Pizio was taking part in a competition to sell as much peach schnapps as possible. He was working at Confetti’s bar in Florida, and felt that the two main reasons most people came to that part of the world were sex, and the beach…you see what he did there. However, there has been some doubt cast on this, as there was actually apparently a recipe printed in a Bartender’s Guide even earlier but needless to say, we have the 80’s to thank for this cocktail.

Now we bartenders can be guilty of taking ourselves too seriously sometimes, and perhaps looking down on a drink like this one, but when it’s made with good ingredients it can be a perfect, refreshing summertime cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 45ml (1 & 1/2oz) vodka

  • 20ml (2/3 oz) peach schnapps/liqueur

  • 45ml (1 & 1/2oz) fresh orange juice

  • 45ml (1 & 1/2oz) cranberry juice

  • Dash lemon juice to taste

  • Orange wedge to garnish

  • Cherry to garnish

Equipment

  • A jigger

  • Shaker tins

  • A hawthorn strainer

  • A fine strainer (optional)

  • A Hurricane or highball glass

Method

Cut a wedge of orange and skewer it with your cherry for a garnish.

Some methods suggest adding the ingredients in order which does create a nice layered looking drink. It does not, however, create the most well balanced or tasty drink and we’re all about great tasting drinks here so…

Add all ingredients to your shaker tins, fill with ice and seal together. Shake as hard as you can until the tins are frosted, then pop open. Double strain in to your glass and then fill with ice.

Garnish, and enjoy!

Suggested Spirits

The vodka here is really just to act as the boozy backbone- whatever your cheap and cheerful go to is will work as long as it is crisp and clean.

Try to find a good quality peach liqueur. We used local heroes Marionette but a crème de peche from Massanaz, Cartron or Giffard will work well too.
