The Old Fashioned

Ingredients

  • 60ml (2oz) rye whiskey

  • 5-10ml (1/6-1/3oz) sugar syrup

  • 2 good dashes of Angostura bitters

  • 2 dashes other bitters (optional)

  • Lemon twist

  • Good ice

Equipment

  • A rocks glass

  • A mixing glass

  • A jigger

  • A barspoon

  • A julep strainer

Method

Prep your twist.

Add bitters, rye and sugar syrup to the glass, fill with as much ice as possible and stir until desired dilution.

Strain over good quality ice, squeeze the lemon twist to expel the citrus oil over the drink then add the twist to the glass. Enjoy!

Suggested Spirits

We like Rittenhouse Rye for our Old Fashioneds. This whiskey is not particularly high in rye, so it still has a lovely fruitiness alongside the savoury spice, and isn’t too heavy in the body.

The second bitters is where you can have some fun. We used Dr Adam Elmegirab’s Aphrodite bitters but you can use anything interesting you have on the shelf (or can leave them out). Orange is standard, but you can have a play with some flavors that are going to support your spirit.
