Irish Coffee
Unlike many cocktails that take their name from famous places, The Irish Coffee does, in fact, hail from Ireland. Administered as a post flight pick me up to warm the cockles of new arrivals to the Emerald Isle, it is a drink which is more than the sum of its parts. For the full story, watch the video above!
Ingredients
45ml (3/4oz) blended Irish whiskey
Roughly 120ml (4oz) filter coffee
15ml brown sugar syrup
Roughly 90ml (3oz) unsweetened cream
Raw or brown sugar sprinkle to garnish
Equipment
A jigger
Shaker tins
A barspoon
A hawthorn strainer coil
Coffee making equipment (e.g. cafetiere)
Method
Heat your glass with hot water and brew your coffee.
Whip your cream by adding to your shaker with the coil from your hawthorn strainer (but no ice) and shaking hard for about 2 minutes until it is whipped but still pourable.
Dump the water out of the glass, and fill with coffee to about halfway.
Add the whiskey and sugar syrup, and stir.
Turn the spoon over and slowly pour your whipped cream on the top to form a separate layer.
Sprinkle with raw sugar to garnish.
Suggested Spirits
Tullamore Dew is the original Irish whiskey for this drink, but any triple distilled Irish blend like Jameson’s will work well.
A medium roast filter coffee works best – we make ours in a cafetiere rather than using an espresso machine.
