El Presidente

This cocktail shows that rum drinks can be just as sophisticated as the rest of them! The original recipe calls for equal parts rum and vermouth, but we like to bump up the rum slightly to give it a little more back bone.

Ingredients

  • 40ml (1 & 1/3oz) flavourful white rum

  • 20ml (2/3oz) blanc vermouth

  • 10ml (1/3oz) dry curacao/triple sec

  • Barspoon grenadine

  • Orange twist to garnish

Equipment

  • A jigger

  • A mixing glass

  • A julep strainer

  • A barspoon

  • A coupe glass

Method

Add all of your ingredients to your mixing glass, fill the glass with ice and stir until it is chilled and diluted.

Strain in to chilled coupe glass, fold orange twist over the drink to express the oils then place it in to garnish.

Enjoy!

Suggested Spirits

We’ve stuck with Havana 3yo as a nod to this cocktail’s Cuban roots but another full flavoured white rum such as Bacardi Carta Blanca or Plantation 3 Star. You could also use a light bodied dark rum, such as Bacardi 8yo or Diplomatico Mantuano, it will just be a richer cocktail.

The vermouth is quite important here- it needs to be a blanc vermouth rather than a dry vermouth or else it doesn’t stand up in the cocktail. The original recipe called for a vermouth from Chambéry, and Dolin Blanc is made in that traditional style. Otherwise Martini or Cinzano Bianco would work well.

This cocktail has such a delicate balance that it is important you use a dry style of triple sec or Curacao- we’ve used local favourites Marionette but Pierre Ferrand make a good one as well.
